Sustainability is a part of who we are and we are on a journey to ensure the Picton Maritime Festival continues to strive to become a completely Sustainable event.
We aim to reduce the environmental impact of the Picton Maritime Festival to a minimum by maximising the four ‘Rs’ so much as reasonably possible:
REFUSE
We encourage visitors to bring their own water bottles, keep-cups and cutlery and REFUSE disposable options. We have a water bottle fill up station to minimise plastic water bottle use. This enables every visitor to contribute to REDUCING the amount of waste generated on site REDUCE
We work with local environmental groups to minimise waste and ensure we are following best practise, while maintaining a safe and sanitary festival site. To reduce our carbon footprint, we source local where possible; this includes entertainment, suppliers, food and beverage, stage equipment and services. We ask our food trucks to only use compostable packaging
RE-USE
We RE-USE resources again and again, or in a new way. We source reused/upcycled waste packaging to be used as part of the Build-a-Raft challenge. We re-use items from Build-a-Raft year after year, and old mussel floats for the raft races. All of our promotional signage has been designed to be reused year after year. We reuse our banners, flags and bunting. RECYCLE
When items finally reach the end of their useful life and cannot be re-used or re-purposed, we send them for RECYCLING through council approved facilities.
SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE We showcase local food and beverages and encourage visitors to shop local - we lead by example. and encourage others to reduce their environmental footprint, while supporting local businesses. We do a beach clean-up before, during and after the event on Friday and Saturday (contact us if you would like to assist!)
